Owari Satsuma Mandarins
Sweet and seedless. Called a "zipper fruit" because they're easy to peel. Placer County Satsuma Mandarins are filled with Vitamin C and synephrine - a natural decongestant that helps relieve cold and allergy symptoms. They're a great snack for kids... and kids at heart!
Clementine Mandarins
Sweet and seedless, these tiny mandarins have a later season and a distinctly delicious flavor.
Navel Oranges
Our Washington Navel Oranges are sweet and easy to segment.
Marsh Grapefruits
An heirloom white grapefruit that's no longer commercially grown, but we still have some!
Eureka Lemons
As you can tell by the name, this pale yellow lemon is a true California citrus.
Meyer Lemons
Eureka lemon hybrid with a navel orange to increase its sweetness. More round and has a smoother peel than Erueka lemons.
Season: June & July Valencia Oranges
Made famous by the Florida citrus growers, the Valencia Orange is actually a native of Southern California. Great for juicing.
Did You Know…?
Valencia oranges, or summer oranges as some people call them, will re-green if left on the tree too long. Heat causes the fruit to re-absorb chlorophyll, changing it back from orange to green, but it still maintainsits sweetness. Valencia oranges sometimes look banged up from hanging on the trees throughout the winter. Winds and rain take their toll on the outside, but the inside has been protected and will be sweet and juicy. Yum!
A Sweet Way to Fight the Sniffles
Placer County Satsuma mandarins begin ripening during the winter, just in time for the cold and flu season. These little citrus fruits are easy to peel and fun to eat, and they provide high doses of Vitamin C and synephrine -- a natural decongestant that helps relieve cold and allergy symptoms.
Made famous in a 2008 study by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Placer County Owari Satsuma mandarins offer high concentrations of the phytochemical synephrine. According to the study, synephrine concentrations in Placer County mandarins were up to six times higher than values previously determined for orange juices. The study concluded that ten ounces of mandarin juice contains as much synephrine as one over-the-counter decongestant pill.
So keep a healthy supply of Placer-grown Mandarin Hill Satsuma mandarins on hand to fight the sniffles. But don't wait too long -- Owari Satsuma mandarins are only in season for a few months.
